Lilly Smith, a former Greenup County restaurateurturned jailer whose hot dogs and plate lunches delighted paying customers and prisoners alike, died yesterday at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell. She was 82 and lived in Flatwoods. Mrs. Smith and her husband, the late Harold J. "Smitty" Smith, ran Smitty's Drive In, a popular place to eat and "the loafing spot," at Argillite and Bellefonte roads in Flatwoods for many years.
Mrs. Smith did much of the cooking and became especially famous for her hot dog sauce, which no one apparently has been able to duplicate, including her daughter Mary Sue Renzi, who watched her mother make the sauce many times. The meat sauce, when necessary, was thinned with water that the hot dogs were boiled in and thickened with corn meal, her daughter said. "They were just wonderful people," Flatwoods furniture store manager Dewey Scott said of the Smiths. "It was kind of a little country restaurant with a great big business.
They had the oldtime hot dogs and root beers with frozen mugs." Mrs. Smith, he said, would stick her head through an opening between the kitchen and main area and greet customers. In addition to the hot dogs, Mrs. Smith's steak plates, which included mashed potatoes and gravy, were popular. Another restaurant in the area, which had hired a former Smitty's employee, even began using Mrs.
Smith's gravy recipe, her daughter said. Smitty's, the turn-around place for the Blue Ribbon Bus Line, was torn down to accommodate a new road. Harold and Sarah Smith then bought a service station not far away and continued to serve food there. Then Harold Smith was elected Greenup County jailer. Sarah Smith continued with her cooking, this time for captive customers.
Harold Smith died while in office in 1983, and Sarah Smith assumed the jailer's job. She later was elected to the post. Trips to the Greenup County Jail by prisoners and police officers were made more pleas- Robert P. Casey, former Pa. governor, dies in sleep ASSOCIATED PRESS SCRANTON, Pa.
