What are the main differences between the PS5 and the Xbox Series X?

While the TV requirements for the PS5 and Xbox Series X are generally similar with regards to their 4K/120Hz, VRR and ALLM performance, there are one or two important differences between the two consoles that may affect your choice of TV.

Initially, support for VRR (also known as HDMI Forum VRR) wasn’t supported out of the box by the PS5 leaving it at a disadvantage to the Xbox Series X and Series S. However, a PlayStation 5 firmware update in April 2022 amended this for existing owners, so parity between the consoles on the Variable Refresh Rate front has been restored.

Does the PS5 support Dolby Vision?

Where inequality does exist though is with Dolby Vision support. Basically, the Xbox Series X (and Series S) do support Dolby Vision and the PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition don’t. How much of an issue this presents is something for you to decide. There currently aren’t many games that support Dolby Vision at 4K/120Hz but of course that will change as more and more compatible titles are released. Whether Sony will introduce Dolby Vision support on the PlayStation 5 to take advantage of this in future is unclear, so these TV recommendations are for the PS5 as it currently stands.

Does the PS5 support Dolby Atmos?

Another difference is that the PS5 only supports the Dolby Atmos surround audio format for Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD disc playback, whereas the Xbox Series S/X can deliver this for gaming and streaming applications, so you’ll be relying on Sony’s proprietary surround sound format for your immersive spatial audio gaming experience.

Top of the pile for the best gaming TV for the PS5 is Samsung’s OLED flagship for 2023, the S95C. This brings with it a full complement of HDMI 2.1 gaming features across its four HDMI ports along with a host of other gamer-centric features married to one of the very best OLED based images out there at the moment.

Thus, the PlayStation 5 will shine courtesy of 4K@120Hz gaming along with FreeSync Premium Pro VRR support plus ALLM which switches off many of the TV’s image processing to speed up the response times. We measured an input lag of 9.3ms at 4K/60 - and this can be halved for 120Hz. Plus, Samsung’s Game Bar displays all of the information you need to monitor gaming performance while providing easy-access for changing these features without leaving the game world.

While not a requirement for PS5 owners, Samsung demonstrates its commitment to those gamers with high end PCs by supporting 4K/144Hz refresh rates along with Super Ultra Wide Game View which helps to get the full picture of your gaming environment. And for those who fancy a change from their PS5 exclusives, there’s access to plenty of alternative gaming content that doesn't require the use of a PC or console through Samsung’s own free Gaming Hub.

Moreover, if you’re a PS5 gamer that loves movies and streaming shows, you’ll benefit from the S95C sporting a second generation Quantum Dot OLED panel which boasts 1340 nits on an industry-standard 10% window and 272 nits full screen in the most accurate Filmmaker Mode. This means it’s one of the new generation of brighter OLED TVs that are now capable of performing well in bright conditions so your gaming and bingeing sessions can easily take place during the day in a normally lit room. It should be noted that the S95C will go much brighter in other picture presets but this moves away from image accuracy to the industry standards.

Samsung QE55S95C review

The anti reflective coating and ultra viewing angle mean spectators seated in the room can also enjoy your gaming endeavours and when it’s time to watch a movie or two there’s superb dynamic range thanks to impressively deep black levels and peak brightness capabilities. But it’s not just the impressive image that will elevate the game experience, the S95C also uses Object Tracking Sound Plus (OTS+) which incorporates eight speakers built into the four corners of the TV which widens the soundstage using a 4.2.2 setup with 70 watts of power. The audio follows the source around the screen for even more realism and it’s one of the better TV sound systems out there if you decide not to go the soundbar/AVR route.

If you plan to wall mount your TV, Samsung makes all the ports available on its One Connect Box which then just has a single cable between itself and the back of the S95C making for a tidy installation that shows off the ultra slim Infinity One Design nicely.

As with all OLED TVs, but in particular with QD-OLED since it is a new technology with no real long-term testing done, you should avoid using bright HDR games with HUDs or similar text or static images for long periods of time as you might see image retention or even burn-in. Make sure you change content types on a regular basis to avoid this risk.

Samsung’s long established stance of not supporting Dolby Vision on its TVs might normally put it at a slight disadvantage in the eyes of some consumers who want that particular feature. However, since the PS5 doesn’t support Dolby Vision gaming anyway and the 4K HDR10 image produced by the S95C is nothing short of stunning, you might not even miss the added sheen that DV affords, so there’s no real reason not to include the S95C as the ultimate choice for PS5 gaming.

Yes, it’s quite pricey given its newness on the market, though the prices are already starting to come down, but you’re getting all the very latest TV and gaming tech the world’s No.1 TV manufacturer has to offer for the legions of gamers out there.

The TCL 65C845K mini LED becomes our recommended best affordable gaming TV for the PS5 and replaces the TCL 55C735K.

There’s a noticeable hike of £400 from the £650 MSRP of the 55 inch C735 to the £1,049 of the 65-inch C845 but once you factor in the price premium of the C845 which has only just hit the market (and which will inevitably come down) along with the mini LED display, 2000 nits of brightness and comprehensive gaming features, the C845 puts in a compelling case for the new budget gaming TV supremo for Sony’s current console.

With stocks of TCL’s C735 getting harder to come by, the company’s recently launched C845 range steps up to the plate as a sure-fire choice for PlayStation 5 owners looking for a relatively inexpensive TV to fulfil their gaming needs and more.

Though 2023’s C745 is actually a more direct successor to last year's C735, the step up C845 range brings with it additional features such as the miniLED backlight with 576 dimming zones and over 2000 nits of brightness which we feel makes a strong argument for value for money. The 55 inch C735 launched in 2022 at £650 compared to the same screen size for this year’s C845 at £849 while the 65 inch models came in with launch prices of £799 and £1049 respectively. That £200 - £250 premium for the C845 over the C735 will narrow as we head towards Black Friday and the end of year sales, positioning the C845 as a great choice to take over from the C735.

Gaming feature wise, there’re two 48Gbps bandwidth HDMI 2.1 inputs delivering 4K/120Hz gaming as an easy match for the Sony PlayStation 5’s 4K/120 frame rate output. The panel’s native refresh rate of 144Hz might prove tempting for PS5 owners who dabble in PC gaming too.

Gaming specific features include AMD FreeSync Premium Pro support as well as Games Master Pro 2.0 which unlocks advanced display experiences such as VRR, Shadow Enhancement, Aiming Aid and the ability to take a screenshot during the session. The gaming bar provides instant feedback on all these parameters so they can be optimised mid game without interrupting the action.

Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) delivers an input lag measured at 12.9ms for 4K/60 - though if you use the Refresh Rate Performance Mode (in the Motion sub-menu) you can drop that down to 9.2ms - and with a 120Hz input it’s 5.0ms, which should be enough for most players looking for the edge over competitors.

Most PlayStation 5 owners will likely be pursuing their gaming pastime in the living or family area and the good news here is that the 65 inch C845’s quoted 2000 plus nits brightness is ample to help its Quantum Dot enhanced images punch through the ambient light. The TV is not really suited to dark room viewing where blooming suppression can rob the image of dynamic range so sticking to bright room viewing will ensure you’re getting the best out of its capabilities.

The onboard Onkyo 2.1 sound system delivers above average sound quality for this level of the market, with a nice wide stereo soundstage that is warm and crisp. Should you decide to go the soundbar or AVR route, eARC for lossless surround audio is available on one of the HDMI 2.0 ports which thankfully leaves both the gamer friendly 2.1 sockets available. This is good news as it means owners of both the latest consoles won’t have to scramble around the back of the set to swap HDMI cables.

The smart OS of choice is Google TV which delivers a typically helpful layout and smooth operation. However, there’s no Freeview Play or UK catch-up services included so TCL UK will provide consumers with a free ROKU stick to provide access to the likes of BBC iPlayer

We reviewed the 65 inch version and it’s that particular model we’re recommending here but the 55 inch will also give a similar experience for gamers at the lower prices of £849. Where things get really interesting though is that the C845 series also comes with 75 and 85 inch iterations offering gamers the chance of a hugely immersive experience on a massive display for as little as £1499 and £1999 respectively. And while we can’t really recommend something costing £1500 and over in our ‘affordable’ gaming TV category, TCL is seemingly paving the way for huge screen sizes on well specified TVs to come within the reach of ordinary consumers during 2023 and that can only be good.

The advent of smaller 42 and 48-inch OLED screens a few years back, meant that those with limited space could benefit from the fantastic image quality afforded by the self emitting technology. This was something that particularly appealed to gamers since it was suddenly easier to have a gaming OLED TV in your office/bedroom rather than book time on the family’s main living room TV for your PS5 sessions.

The smallest entry in LG C2 range from 2022, the OLED42C2, gets the same array of gaming specs as the larger 65 and 77 inch models. This means four HDMI 2.1 (48Gbps) ports plus support for 4K/120Hz (including Dolby Vision gaming at 120fps – something the PlayStation 5 won’t actually be able to take advantage of, but there’s nothing wrong with a bit of future proofing), VRR (including FreeSync and G-Sync), and ALLM. The Game Optimiser menu and features bar allows you to access and adjust all of your game parameters during gameplay while Input lag measures in at 12.9ms at 4K/60, and 9.2ms when using the Input Delay Boost option. You can half these figures when feeding the panel a 120Hz signal.

LG OLED42C2 review

While the 42 and 48 inch models don’t have the Brightness Boosting technology of the larger screen sizes, the LG 42C2 still measures in at 655 nits on an industry-standard 10% window 111 nits at full-screen in Filmmaker mode. That’s certainly bright enough for the second room role it's likely to be fulfilling and enough for a punchy and dynamic HDR10 image from the PS5 console.

Some gamers worry about the possibility of screen burn when considering an OLED TV for gaming but unless you are utterly committed to endless hours of gameplay with a static HUD on screen, you’re not likely to experience any issues. A mixture of gaming styles and genres will help mitigate this.

A 42-inch sized OLED panel is also available in LG’s latest C3 OLED range but given the 42C2 can now be found for £999 while its newer OLED42C3 stablemate is £1,299, the older TV represents better value for money. You’re matching the current model across all the gaming parameters and only losing out on a bit of brightness and some smarter image processing from the α9 Gen 6 AI 4K processor.

Ultimately, with the 42-inch LG C2, you’re getting all the current gaming features across four HDMI ports, superb image accuracy, and even though the PS5 doesn’t support it, the LG C2’s compatibility with Dolby Vision is there if you need it for movies and TV in your gaming downtime. And all for under £1,000.

It would seem odd to have a list of best gaming TVs for Sony’s PlayStation 5 console and to not actually have a Sony TV included in that list, so we’re adding Sony’s mid tier Bravia XR A80L OLED into the mix.

Proving a more cost effective solution than last year’s A95K, which was Sony’s first OLED TV with a QD-OLED panel and which went on to take our Best TV of the Year Editor’s Choice Award for 2022, the A84L matches the gaming features of the more expensive TV but loses out on the brightness and colour volume afforded by the debutant QD-OLED panel.

That said, brightness still comes in at 623 nits on a 10% industry-standard window and 133 nits on a 100% white window for the A84L compared to the 825 and 183 nits respectively on the A95K; ample to deliver very good HDR10 and Dolby Vision performance on movies and TV shows. And while Dolby Vision gaming is limited to 4K/60Hz on the TV, since the PS5 doesn’t support Dolby Vision, that’s not really an issue - though Xbox Series X aficionados might want to take notice.

Sony XR-65A84L/A80L review

The A84L presents the expected selection of HDMI 2.1 features such as VRR, ALLM and 4K/120Hz gaming with HDR10 but these are disappointingly only on offer across two ports rather than the four available on LG and Samsung models. Be aware that eARC uses one of these HDMI 2.1 sockets so if you need that functionality for a soundbar or AVR, you will then be down to a single HDMI 2.1 port. As long as you’re just sticking to a single console, this might not be a concern.

Where the A84L does pull out its PS5 chops is with its ‘Perfect for PlayStation’ branding. This badge denotes two exclusive PS5 features that can be brought to bear. The first is Auto HDR Tone Mapping which sees the PlayStation 5 automatically recognise individual BRAVIA TV models and select the best HDR setting for the TV accordingly. The second is Auto Genre Picture Mode where the TV recognises the input signal and automatically switches into Game Mode when gaming to minimise input lag. We measured this at 16.3ms - slightly higher than that on offer from rivals but still acceptable for all but the most response drive FPS titles.

Sony is also implementing its Game Menu system which affords players quick access to settings such as black levels, motion control, detail levels, all without interrupting the flow of gameplay.

There’s also no doubting the high regard that the company’s TVs garner for their image quality, motion and upscaling. The Cognitive Processor XR found on the Bravia XR range continues to impress and Google TV is stable, fast and works a charm so, aside from a lack of HDR10+ support, movies and streaming deliver on all fronts.

And for the sake of clarity, the UK A80L and A84L models are essentially the same TV delivering exactly the same performance, so our conclusions are valid for both iterations.. The different SKU nomenclatures denote different retailers with the A84L sports a cosmetic tweak to the remote and a Rich Colour Enhancer in Vivid mode.
